OLE DB is definitely not the way to go (it had been deprecated but, https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/sqlnativeclient/2017/10/06/announcing-the-new-release-of-ole-db-driver-for-sql-server/ however, Microsoft might have another change of mind, it's a mess, however you look at it, https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/sqlreleaseservices/snac-lifecycle-explained/ )
The Native Client is also being replaced/renamed... by/to the "ODBC Driver 13 for SQL Server" so the line of preference should be:
ODBC Driver 13 for SQL Server
SQL Server Native Client 11.0 (support until July 2022)
SQL Server Native Client 10.0 (support until Sept. 2019)
SQL Server (seemingly supported until heck freezes over)
With emphasis on "should".
The "SQL Server" driver has had some updates/fixes but presents the least functionality. In reality, take the best you can get and in general don't go to a newer client than the Backend SQL Server you've been given to play with.
At one client I just gave in and implemented "SQL Server" Driver for all workstations because it "just worked" even though it was demonstrably slower. "Power Users" got an upgrade if they had a problem.
Yours,
Andrew
