LAN to me means a wired local network - high speed and very reliable with perhaps only one or two "hops" between the client and the server.

WAN to me means the Internet - can be high speed and reasonably reliable, but with up to 30 "hops" between the client and the server.

Throw Citrix into the mix, and either environment is OK for Access because Citrix "virtualizes" the desktop on the server and sends only the screen images and keystrokes over the line.  Access runs local on the server, with each user having its own session.
