"if ... learning about ribbon development is worth the journey." Like much of learning, the first investment of time is of little use except as a foundation for further learning about the subject. The *later* learning can then be very worthwhile.
There is a deep satisfaction to be had from getting a custom ribbon to the point where you can dispense with the oft repeated buttons on a form and allow the user to deep-dive or cross-reference based on the data on the current screen. And yes, the satisfaction does outweigh the frustrations once you get far enough into it.
