yes, here is one way -- look at how attachments are done for the free contact management template here:
Contacts -- Names, Addresses, Phone Numbers, eMail Addresses, Websites, Lists, Projects, Notes, Attachments
to keep it simple, additional checking to weed duplicates is not done, but it could be. I also rename files but not sure I did that in the public version.

when browsing, if a user identifies same file that is already attached to another record, the file does not need to be copied again (use code to detect that). This is a big advantage to attaching information to each record in the database. An analysis of one database with a lot of attachments found that only 30% of the "attachment" files were unique when they were converted to external files again since it is common for more than one record to reference the same thing (not counting things like human photos). Aside from better performance, there can be less wasted space with duplicates with files as files. Also, external files are easier to render, especially when versions change.

I normally hang folders off the back-end directory for shared images and shared files. I also have an interface to move/copy and then rename files they want to include -- but VBA does it all, they do not need to browse themselves except to identify the source files in the windows dialog box. This is a convenient way to keep external files as files and move/point to the back-end and everything it needs to reference. I have code to get that BE directory for each user and then tack on whatever subfolder may be needed such as \images. Users also need permissions for the back-end subdirectories too.
