Kevin-

Yes, SQL Server Express is pretty much the same except for size and simultaneous connections.

The number of tables doesn't matter so much as their size.  Forms, Reports, and code are much more susceptible corruption than just tables.  You can get in a situation with an Access back end where Access "thinks" the back end might be corrupted if someone just disconnects without properly shutting down your app - like turn off the power or the network connection drops.  That's easily fixable with a compact/repair of the back end.  Corruption in a back end that is just tables is very very rare.

Be aware that if your app doesn't follow good client/server design rules, moving to SQL Server will just make it run slower.

The reasons I consider migrating to ms access are:

1.I have so many tables. It might get slower and slower.

2.If one table got corrupted, the whole database can't be open

3.Sql server has backup tool.

By the way, is sql server express works the same as standard version except of the size limitation? Thanks.

Kevin

MySQL is a bit simpler, and some versions are free, but you'll need a third-party ODBC interface.  SQL Server is also a Microsoft product, so Access comes with the link support built-in for free.

But why do you think migrating your back end will help?  How many concurrent users do you have?  Is your application well-designed for client-server?  You should read BuildingAccessAppsCH03.pdf that you can find on our website in Files / Articles_Excerpts.

Dear All,

I am planning to export my ms access backend to sql server. I was told that MySql is better. What would you suggest? Thanks in advance.
