If using virtual machines is not the best choice, it certainly is a very good choice that eliminates any risk of cross- version conflicts and corruption.

As stated, virtual operating systems are the best way to go when multiple versions are necessary. Conflicting DLLs can really mess up an Office installation. I used to run Access 2000 and 2003 and 2007 with the full suite of Office 2010 and finally dropped all the older versions.

 

On one of my PCs, I have Office 2010 (without Access) and Access 2003. That runs well except for code that uses Outlook Automation. Access 2003 can't see Outlook 2010. The objects just won't work even with late-binding. I had to use vbMAPI from everythingaccess.com to send out emails using the Outlook object.
