Re: [MS_AccessPros] Multi-Value Fields

David-

Multi-value fields make it difficult to get to the individual values in a record.  If you want to see the values individually, you have to use the .Value property - and then you'll get extra rows, one per value.  Access supports these non-relational fields by building a hidden table that you can't see or manipulate.  You're much better off designing your table structure correctly.

I don't fully understand the "down side", but that is why I asked what experienced developers would do.  I will just take your word, and proceed with using join tables and many to many relationships.

I am looking at the MS Access templates as a learning tool, but they don't do things in those templates like most experienced developer's seem to suggest (e.g. naming conventions, using continuous forms instead of data sheets, etc.).  Where would I go to see example databases with "best practice" coding?  In particular, any examples of an Issues database like the one on MS.

Concur wholeheartedly.  All the extra coding to extract out the data too…

Personally, I wouldn't use multi-value fields. I much prefer the control I have over normalized tables.

I am looking at the MS Access Template called  ISSUES.  It utilizes a field property of "allow multi-values".  Are there any potential issues with using this property?

For a small number of items, it seems to be a simple option as compared to creating a many to many relationship between two tables with a join table.  But sometimes I see guidance from experienced developers to not use some of the Access options due to problems which might show up later.

Thanks, David
