Thanks very much Crystal. Joins are not on date fields, they are all on integer fields and there are indexes for the fields, only sort by a date field.  How do I know if this is the query performance issue?  When I ran the query directly in Access front end, it seems results come back right away. I'm not familiar with Access.  Does Access actually still takes long time to load all records? The search function needs to cover all 40-50k records, how do I get around this?  When link tables linked to Access tables with same records, search results comes back quickly, though I can't tell how it does it.
