Re: [MS_AccessPros] Microsoft Office Access 2003 Inside Out

James-

Yeah, my last Windows machine was a Dell, and I noticed a huge increase in performance when I swapped out the hard drive for an SSD.  Flash or SSD is the way to go for local storage.

Thanks, John.

Mine is a 2.3 GHz i5 and pretty much bottom of the line when I bought it with 4GB RAM. The SSD made a world of difference, and the extra RAM gave another boost. Based on your experience I may look at bumping up the allocation on the VM to 3GB to see if that makes any difference on my projects. My battery is still in good shape, but I want hardware that's able to run the latest OS. And I'm way past retirement age also! 😄

Thanks for getting back with me, and I may have more questions later.

James-

I'm on a MacBook Air 2012 - running OS X El Capitan. 2GHz Intel Core i7. 8GB of ram. 500GB flash drive. I give my VMs 3GB (only run one at a time) because it's been my experience that Access runs better with more RAM. It's an "old" machine at this point (just replaced the battery), but it's still a lot better than most of the Windows machines out there. I picked an Air for portability. Might upgrade one more time (I'm long past retirement age) in the next year or so.

John,

Looks like you have switched from VMware Fusion to Parallels now, so I have
some questions if you don't mind:

1. Which Mac are you running? At one point you had a MacBook Pro but may
have changed.

2. How much total RAM do you have, and how much is allocated to Parallels?

3. Which Mac OS do you have?

I ask all of this because I'm looking to upgrade my Mac, perhaps this year.
It's an early-2011 MBP running El Capitan with 16 GB RAM with 2 GB
allocated to Parallels 11 with Windows 10. A new SSD makes it pretty zippy
for hardware that's five years old. I use only Access 2010, and my largest
database is about 1.7 million records and 1.2 GB. I seem to be able to work
with that OK but am concerned about the overall age of the hardware even
though it's been extremely reliable and solid to this point.

If you have any recommendations, especially memory allocation, I'd sure be
interested.

Thanks!!

James
