[MS_AccessPros] Make-Table Query hangs

I am using Access 2003 on XP. I have a complex query which generates rows correctly, but I haven't managed to get to a final one as yet. When I try to use a Make-Table query to make the results permanent, the progress bar goes as expected, but when it reaches the end, the file size of the database starts increasing (viewed in Windows Explorer). After a while, the file is still being continually modified, CPU still 100% occupied, but the filesize remains constant at about double the original, and I never get the dialog asking to paste nnnn records. The screen is frozen.

However, activity stops when I press CtrlBreak, and I can then "Compact & Repair" to restore the original filesize.

What might be the problem?. There is no obvious HDD activity occurring, and there are no other unusual tasks running as far as I know. I get the same on two PCs.

Is there a way of limiting the number of rows a query generates?
