Re: [MS_AccessPros] New goal - be a developer

I think the previous versions are still true today and should contain everything you should know about Access applications even with 2016.

One caution is that developing is not just about being a good "coder". You also need project management skills. It starts with analyzing needs and continues through managing scope. There is a a lot more to consider. I wish I had some recommendations but can only suggest you google this. Hopefully someone here has some good recommendations.

Duane

I notice the books listed in Ray's note are for Access 2010 or older. I, too, would like to improve my skills with Access. Given that I have Access 2016, are those older books the way to go? Or should I look for books for Access 2016? I'd like to make the best use of what will likely be a substantial amount of time.

Ray - those would be the books I'd choose. When you get through and understand "Inside Out" you will know more than the average power user.

Once you understand relational database structure you are halfway there. VBA coding is the next big step.

Keep in mind Google and this group are your biggest assets. Make sure you examine our samples in the File section.

Just keep trying new stuff. As to being a "competent developer", you are one when you know how to find solutions for what you don't know how to do.

Subject:[MS_AccessPros] New goal - be a developer

Hi Everyone

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.  I've a personal goal to become a competent database developer – the slight wrinkle is how do you know when you've achieved that status?  I've created simple databases with Access for a while, but I want to raise my game.  I can now devote more time to this adventure.

My plan is to work through the following books:

Building Access Applications – J. Viescas

Access 2010 Inside Out – J Conrad, J. Viescas

Access 2010 VBA Programming – A. Couch

Access 2010 Programmer's Reference – T. Hennig et al

I follow the questions and answers in this forum and it shows me there is so much to learn.  Exciting not daunting.

I'd appreciate your ideas on how to track progress towards my goal, how to capture lessons for reuse, how to build a library of reusable code and anything else you might think useful.

Many thanks

Ray
