I'm actually suggesting that you start further back than just re-building the applications. Start by analyzing your data requirments and develop a solid structure for your data. Simply splitting the existing structure into FE and BE will most likely be only an imperfect solution that will need to be reworked yet again in the future. Obviously you need to preserve any data accumulated to date so when you have you structure(s) perfected you can import the data you already have into the new structure.

I am willing to do that if that is the best way to do it. So start over with one of the applications, splitting it into a FE and BE. And then when complete, start over with the other applications.

'Least painful' doesn't necessarily mean 'easiest' or least amount of work. The approach for the re-work you are describing is probably no different that the approach for designing a new application from scratch. To be 'least painful' that approach means putting a lot of effort in up-front to plan the new application. While it is sometimes difficult to turn away from existing work completely, my experience has been that, that is exactly what is needed when your starting point is an existing set of work. Step back from what you have already done, and clearly define, first, the problem (or problems) you are trying to address, then identify and plan the solution (or solutions) that best address the problem(s).

I have a small mess I created via the learning by doing process. I have three applications that sort of grew from each other. I copied one application (with tables), renamed it, and proceded to build the new application. I now know that was not what should have been done and want to correct my sins.
I have three applications. Some of the tables are common to all three applications; some common to two. Some of the common tables have exactly the same data, but different table names. In a couple of cases one table has more data than the others.
I want to split the applications from the tables and point them to a common folder.
What is the least painful process to do this?
