RE: [MS_AccessPros] Re: Splitting database

Russ,

What you have suggested is essentially correct. However, it doesn't matter
whether or not you have checked "Use Special Keys." Certainly make that
setting according to your needs in the production application. That setting
and the Hide Navigation setting will be in place when the application is
opened normally. When you hold the shift key while opening (this is known as
Shift-Key Bypass) then the Navigation pane and special keys option settings
will be ignored.

To "bullet proof" the production application so that the users can't also
bypass the settings with the Shift key, you need to disable the shift key
bypass property. For more information on how to do this see Jeff Conrad's
page http://www.accessmvp.com/JConrad/accessjunkie/shiftkey.html Personally
I like Ricky Hick's utility posted at UtterAccess.com

Phil,
I am no expert with Access, but there are several things you can do to hide
the tables from the end user. 2010 may be slightly different but using
Access 2007 for example you can click on the little icon in the top left
corner of the open db and choose Access Options then select This Database
from that list. Try hiding the Navigation Pane but be sure you've checked
the box that says "Use Special Keys". Then when the user opens the db
assuming you have a form that opens when it starts - another selection under
Display Form, the left Navigation pane will be hidden.

Now, when you want to work on the db yourself you'll want that pane open, so
here is where the Use Special Keys comes in handy. When you click on the db
name, hold the shift key down and the pane will be visible to you. In older
versions of Access I was able to hide what's now called the ribbon, but I've
not stumbled upon that trick yet.
