[MS_AccessPros] Re: MS Office Templates - Can they be joined

Stan

When I was doing contract work I used the Time and Billing template. You might want to start with that and then see what you need to add. You probably need a work order database and something for scheduling. I haven't looked at all the templates so I don't know what they can do.

I do handyman work on the side of this job and am considering using the following templates. Run the business solo and have no desire to have employees.

· Desktop Contacts or Desktop Personal Contact Manager

· Desktop Customer Service

· Somehow incorporate aspects of Desktop Real Estate

· Work Order Management Database

· Desktop Business Account Ledger

· Desktop Services Template

The way I see the opening screen is:

1. Job Request

2. Client Information

3. Accounting

4. Reports / Metrics

5. Set-up

Well, it's nice to see my post finally made it. Now about your question...

The best book on Access is "Microsoft Access 2010 Inside Out" by John Viescas ( one of our MVP members) and Jeff Conrad. The way I'd start is by importing everything into a new database and poke around in it. The startup form will probably be the biggest challenge since each template has its own startup. I don't know how much code has been written for the templates, but as long as everything has a unique name you should be okay. For example, if you get two "Employee" tables you will have to make sure they have the same fields. Pick one to use and then add whatever fields from the other one that are missing.

Whatever you do, don't start adding data until you are finished fixing everything. And we're here to help. By the bye, which templates are you wanting to combine?

Bill

No development experience…but geesh…cannot be something that I cannot learn if pointed in the right direction.

Thanks.

Sure, you can "join" them. You'd have to import everything from each template into a new database and then create a new startup form that gives you navigation to both sets. I can't tell you exactly what else is involved without going through the 2 templates, but it will probably have to be done by a developer. How experienced are you in that area?
