RE: [MS_AccessPros] Analyze two table

There are query wizards for Find Duplicates and Find Unmatched. I expect one or the other would be a good start.

[MS_AccessPros] Re: User level security password

I think I've worked out for myself. There's no need for a password re-check - I just need to check that 'currentuser() is a member of the 'accounts' group.
Thanks guys - It helped putting on it paper!

[MS_AccessPros] User level security password

Hi
I'm using access 2003 & have implemented user-level security & it's working fine.
Before an order is despatched the customer's credit limit is checked & the order is stopped if they are over the limit.

I'd like to add an button for someone in the accounts department to be able to over-ride this stop if required, by re-entering their login password (just to save having to have another password). It will open a form asking for their password. I can get their username from currentUser(), but is there anyway of checking that the password they enter is correct for that user?

Many thanks

[MS_AccessPros] Re: copy Text Spec from one DB to another

OK, I did some Google searches and found enough info that I fixed this. The text specs are in two hidden system tables, MSysIMEXSpecs and MSysIMEXColumns. I had the both db's show these tables and I verified that they did not exist in the "fixed" copy. Then I simply imported them with the external data wizard and my procedure works again. I'm happy! Have a great day everyone.

Easy-squeezy, Doyce.

Start up the import wizard. When you get to the list of objects click on the Options button on the right. That expands the object box and you'll see Import/Export Specs. Check the box and click OK. That will show you a list of specs to import.

I'll never understand why those Options aren't always visible.

[MS_AccessPros] copy Text Spec from one DB to another

Hello friends.

I "fixed" a db by creating a new one and copying all the objects from the old one to the new one. However, a text spec from the old one did not copy and I don't know how to move it. I have a backup copy of the old with the text spec in it. Is it possible to export it from the backup and import it into the new one? If so, how?

[MS_AccessPros] Re: Combox bound column

Phucon

Yes, the bound column should ALWAYS be the ID. Should there be duplicate texts the combo box will not work if bound to the text field.

The client should not see the data directly in the table. It should always be presented in a form or report so you have better control over what the user does. And it is an easy matter to present the text instead of the ID.

One example of user error:
1. The document warnings have been turned off.
2. the user clicks the upper left corner of the table. All records will be highlighted.
3. Then the user panics and presses Esc. Poof! the entire table is emptied.

RE: [MS_AccessPros] Combox bound column

Phucon-

The normal design is to use a code number in the main table that links to
the Primary Key of a lookup table that may also contain a description. When
the user want's to see the text instead of the code number, give them a
query that links the two tables and displays the related text from the
lookup table. The general reasoning is a number is more efficient to store
that text, but only marginally so. If the user wants text in the table, be
sure to give them a text field instead of a numeric field. You also don't
need the number as a Primary Key in the lookup table - just make the text
field the Primary Key.

If the rowsource of a combo box has an id column and a description column,
and when we use the wizard to create a combo box, it bounds to the id column
automatically.
Each time an item's selected, it stored the id in the table instead of the
text (description). The users prefer to see the text in the table rather
than an id. I satisfied user's request by changing the bound column from the
id column to the description column.
My question is, should the bound column always be the id column? Or it does
not matter?

Thank you

RE: [MS_AccessPros] Runtime 2007 with Access 2003 db

Hi Jane,

You can use a form or report object to do this. The general pattern for a
report is this:

Sub ReportOpenAndDisplay()

'declare the object

Dim rpt As Access.Report

'instantiate the object

'report must have a module for it to appear in the project explorer

Set rpt = Report_rptTestLogErrors 'substitute your report name

With rpt

'assign record source

.RecordSource = ""

'display the report

.Visible = True

End With

End Sub

Thanks Glen. That will help - I didn't know about the runtime switch, I was
looking around to install runtime on a access clean PC.

Also what do you mean by setting the recordsource & captions via a statement
rather than in design view.
At the moment I have a PrintReport function that I pass the recordsource and
the caption. It opens the report in design view, sets the recordsource &
caption & prints to the default printer for that report. How would I do it
not in design view?
Many thanks
