RE: [MS_AccessPros] Re: Windows 10 Developer tools / education

Giorgio

Being that you have not included the entire thread and my time is limited these days, I can only answer partially.

Active Directory (AD) is the overall system that is used for user authentication and permissions. Each user on a network is given a unique user name and password. The initial password is used so the user can log on to the network for the first time. Once on, the user must change his password following the AD rules. They can be as complex as the network administrator sets. Most admins set a rule of a minimum number of characters in length plus a minimum of characters from each of 4 groups: Upper case; lower case; numbers; special characters such as !@#$.

Permissions to files and folders are set for AD groups and in some cases a specific AD user. These permissions are Read/Write/Edit/Delete. All or none may be granted.

Source control is a method of keeping track of who has created/edited/deleted objects or code and who is able to develop within a project. This keeps a history for those objects and code so the administrator can revert back to a previous version or accept the new creations/changes. Generally source control is used for a project with a team of developers, but single developers also find it useful for controlling development on a granular level.

I think you can see what advantages AD and source control have when developing and deploying applications on whatever system level.

Going further, there are permissions set at the database level that may or may not be dependent upon the AD groups/users. SQL Server can authenticate on user-password authentication at the SQL Server instance level; the database level or even the column level of one table or view. Likewise, SQL can use Windows Authentication which would rely on AD groups/users. If I log onto a network I can only do things that my user name has permissions to do.

Regards,

Bill

Hi Crystal, thank you, yes, I've watched the Channel 9 video of your presentation on Access Web Apps but it contains no leads to answer the question in my previous message: What do Active Directory and source control do and does an Access developer who wants to create Access Web Apps need them?

btw, do you also have the link to Bill Jelen's video on Power Pivot presentation that came after yours?
