I knew you would have the answer John. I have an older book of yours the SQL for mere mortals 2nd ed pg 317 and this is a bit different.

To do a FULL OUTER JOIN in Access, you must do this:
SELECT A.*, B.*
FROM A LEFT JOIN B
ON A.Key = B.Key
UNION ALL
SELECT A.*, B.*
FROM B LEFT JOIN A
ON B.Key = A.Key
WHERE A.Key IS NULL;
