[MS_AccessPros] Re: Question on malicious code

Hi John,

John Viescas gave you excellent advice on this matter. That is the only way you can be sure the code is not going to do damage to your computer.

I think it would be good also to use only trusted sources.

I could very easily make a database that would reformat your hard drive using WMI and no, your antivirus would not catch it.

I have a sample database that uses WMI on my website that is free for everyone to download and use. It contains code to stop and start Services and Processes and change the Registry and and AFAIK no antivirus has never stopped it from being downloaded.

One place that I believe is safe to download databases is Roger's Access Library. There are hundreds of sample databases there for a large variety of subjects.

So I think downloading from only trusted sources and following John's advice would be a good way to protect your computer.

Kind Regards,
Patrick Wood

My question is, if I were to download them how would I know if the db had some code somewhere that would update something on my computer allowing someone to access everything on my computer? I'm just curious if that is possible or would my anti-virus catch it? I figured someone might be able to do something in VBA that would change a library, dll or something that would persist.
