[MS_AccessPros] Data Type for Mixed Data

In my application I am collecting equipment monitoring data.  I have a table of Parameters, and most of the data is analytical data and will be numeric, but some of the data is observations (clean or dirty, clear or turbid, smooth or vibrating, etc).  Some of the analytical input will include the < or > signs.  Any advice on data type for the results for these parameters?

I am thinking that the Result field will need to be string data.  However, for the data that is numeric I will want to convert to decimal and do math such as average, max, min, etc.

In searching the net I find the VAL function which will convert a string to numeric, but just until a non-numeric character is found in the string.  In the case where a < or > symbol exists, it is the first character, so this isn't going to work.  And truthfully, I am not even sure I want it to work for < and > values.

Anyone have advice for this?
