RE: [MS_AccessPros] Cannot use S:\thefile.mdb file already in use

Patty, I went through a flippin nightmare here with a similar situation. I got my intelligence insulted regularly because corporate IT would send me information regarding "exclusive access" stuff and other trite nonsense. I believe it was John Viescas? along with some google searches and corporate finally owing up to the fact that the back end tables were on NAS boxes and not regular servers that was the problem. See, I didn't have this problem until I ended up with a higher usage or at least it made the problem more salient. It felt before hand that the user was trying to put a lock on the same tables that it already had opened, but they clearly didn't open it twice etc. all this aggravation... I kept bothering corporate to give me event logs to show and when they said that they didn't have event logs because it was on an NAS box and John said that they had access lock problems with their NAS situation... well...

So..... I was finally able to move the back end tables over on to REAL windows severs and guess what? The problem went away. It was a wonderful coup.

Best of success.

Patty,

Does it always happen on the second and subsequent times that the database is opened; or can it also happen the first time an attempt to open is initiated? If the issue occurs after the database has been opened and then closed, you might look into how the database is being closed. It could be that Access isn't being softly shut down.

Is the PC turned off at COB each day? If not, when the issue occurs, might try powering down the PC and turning it back on to see if that clears the lock.

Have you looked at the Task manager to see if Access is still loaded? If it is and the database can't be opened, having Access still open behind the scenes could cause this behavior.

Maybe.....

Jeff

Has anyone experienced this problem?

One PC sometimes gets the message: Cannot use s:\thefile.mdb file already in use. This only happens every now and then.

The database is a FE/BE Access configuration FE is an mde, BE is an mdb.
The FE is located on the user's machine.
The BE is located on our server.

The PC in question has full read/write privileges to the folder containing the BE.

Everyone else (about 15 users) do not have any problems using the application.

TIA,
Patty
