hi Kevin,

another important consideration is Null ... + does not ignore them -- any null makes everything not able to be determined. So if a control has no value, how should the expression compensate?

1. =IIF (not isNull(controlname1] and not isNull([controlname2], [controlname1]+[controlname2],null)
or
2.
=nz( [controlname1], 0 ) + nz( [controlname2],0)
...
or something else?
