A trick I use is to click the ruler at the very right end. That will select whatever object is directly below where you click regardless of the section. Scroll up and down in the form or report looking for the selected object. Frequently for me the elusive object has been a line.

Subject: [MS_AccessPros] Phantom Object?
I have a report with all the elements contained in a 16cm width to
print on A4. Something unseen is preventing the width from being less
than 17cm.
How do I find an answer to the the problem?
Many thanks,
Robin Chapple

There should be a drop-down list box in the Formating toolbar showing all
the objects in the report. You'll just have to look at the properties of
each in turn to find the wide one or the displaced-to-the-right one.
Probably a horizontal line which is not obvious in the design view.
