Just a thought, if your database is on a drive or server that is backed up, requesting that it be restored to a different location or if that's not possible, then call a halt to database usage to cut a backup and have the restore overlay the current database. This might have to be done off hours and can be complicated by geographically dispersed usage, but it can all be done.
Once restored, then the data ought t be retrievable via various options and re-added to the production database.
All this wonderfulness isn't particularly difficult or complex. It just takes time and coordination.
I also agree with both Glenn's and Bill's comments. I always insist on audit trails simply because it's important for one to cover one's database. LOL

Glenn's suggestion is my standard practice. I guess that's because of the industries I've worked in these last 13 years: banks and healthcare. Both require audit trails and tracking user actions.
My users never can delete records unless the records are of no historical value. And that has to be decided by the division director or similarly resonsible person. If records REALLY should be deleted then only the database admin can do it.
