I've just finished recovering my friend's database by using a few backups and "blending" the data into a consistent state. There was only 1 record that couldn't be recovered which was not bad. It took 3 hrs (going round in circles a few times) but I learnt a lot on the way.
I'm going to ask questions about how the database is actually used, monitor the situation and force the database to be split.
