Re: [MS_AccessPros] Re: The end of Yahoo Groups

thanks for the heads-up, Jaime! and Aden, for the extra notes.

This is sad news but not as bad as it seems

If we stay here, we will lose Post history and Files. We don't use much else except maybe moderating new members. Perhaps you'd just be in or out ... until we try it, maybe we really wouldn't know. As for Files to show your database so you can get help ... there are a number of free services for this. Those who ask questions generally wouldn't want their file to be up there forever anyway.

I suggest that Bill add what is in Files, to share, to his site (which isn't currently up) or I can make a place on my site for them on my site, msAccessGurus.com -- or someone else can host them.

It seems that except for being able to look up and refer to past posts and files, the group can still function pretty much the same, somewhat, and messages can still come to our email accounts. We'll have to take care, as we should already do, to keep post history when we respond!

Another change seems to be that the group will be harder to join as new members will only be able to join by invitation. Maybe there could be a posted email address for those wishing to be added, and, once reviewed, an invitation can be sent. New people would have to explain why they want to join.

As a moderator, I looked up how to archive things and discovered there's a limit on what you can request. I saved our member list, albeit not in a good format -- but got it how I could (which would take writing code to structure). We don't really look at the member list much anyway.

Bill, perhaps Files could be archived (I can help with this if you want me to) and posted on one of our domains? and then just see how it goes? Unless you WANT to go through all the trouble of setting this up again on another platform, which I suspect perhaps you don't.

have an awesome day,
crystal

Hi Bill and your team, First appreciation for all of you for providing this MsAcess support program. Yes, its s bit sad with the Yahoogroups YG functionality coming to an end, at least ad we knew it to be. YG will still work but won't store posted messages which is a big bother. However there are 4 options to continue/save existing posting and other data, this is what I learnt. 1. Request YG to export your data. This can be done by an option in the moderator's Yahoo Dashboard. I believe the resultant download will be HTML compatible. 2. Use a mailing list called groups.io. It is written by the same guy who had a hand in creating YG. Groups.io will accept existing data and make it available in their functionality. However they have a charge of $110 to allow data to be brought in. But it is free otherwise. 3. Googlegroups. But no data transfer from YG possible. 4. Starting a Facebook group. Not sure about data transfer. Above information is gleaned from various sites, but guys please double check and point out if you find any errors in my surmise. Thanks once again Bill and team and contributors. - Aden.

We could do that. I'll look into it. It will probably be painful for all our members to make that change, and I know it will take a lot of work to set up the moderators. Maybe if I start on it Saturday I can at least get the group started in Google Groups.

Regards,
Bill Mosca

My outlook group is considering moving to google groups. Is there a consensus to do the same? or some other platform. I have been greatly benefited by these groups.

Jaime - Thanks for posting that link. Sad but true, our files are going away. I'll salvage as much as I can and store them on my OneDrive as a public folder. I can't promise I'll get everything, but I'll try.
