Re: [MS_AccessPros] Re: Historical Stock Data

Hi Bob,

I would suggest this:

use Access to store all the data since it is not practical to store in Excel

It does make sense, however, to use Excel as a user interface -- everything from choosing which data to look at to requerying one or more rnages in the workbook.  The reason I suggest Excel for the user interface is because so much is already built-in to do stock analysis... hi/lo/close functions and chart markers ... easy calculation of moving averages ... and much more.  With Access, you'd be reinventing a lot of tools.

Use Access to import and store all the data -- and the administrative forms and reports that entails.

the reasons WHY the data is being collected is often so that parts of it can get analyzed.  As more indexes are devised, equations can be created in Access ... which feeds the data that gets manipulated in Excel.

I'll bet you can also find more tools created by others if you look down the Excel path.  Start with the Excel MVP websites listed on www.MVPs.org

Warm Regards,
Crystal

A bingoogle search might turn up some pre-built templates or database schema. There are lots of sites which offer them. You might find one which is reasonably close to what you have in mind, although you'll still want to modify it to your needs.

At a minimum, I would store the following:  ticker symbol, open price, high price, low price, close price, volume, open interest, sector, industry, exchange. This data would be collected on over 10,000 companies daily. Would want to upload a minimum of last 10 years of data.  I would need to run a daily analysis of relationships between price and volume for entire market indexes, sectors, industries and individual companies. Are you able to get me started on a design?
