In addition to John's response, I'd like to add that if you do not want users to delete records you can set up your forms to not allow deletions. And NEVER allow them direct access to the tables.

Other than that, there really isn't a need for AutoNumbers to be absolutely without gaps. In fact, there is no need for the users to even see the ANs as they are meaningless to the user.
