Thanks for the response. I finally got it working today. The trick was to switch to a more robust pdf creator (rather than a low-end free version). I switched to Adobe PDF Creator (I hope that is not considered advertising). I was then able to set the output to a specific printer (Adobe PDF Creator) where I could set the parameters necessary to output to a specific folder, not display the output, etc.
The only trick was to close the report and then rename it (pausing until the file was actually available). It seems that there is a slight delay in getting the pdf created and saved so it could be renamed (with a name that can be referenced in an XML file).

I do this sort of thing all the time. What pdf creator are you using, and how do you create them?
The PDF maker I use installs on the computer as a printer, and we can generate an ini file that will set the output location, file type, etc of the document we're printing. The program is called bullzip.
The documentation of the PDF creator you use may specify how to set these variables.
