RE: [MS_AccessPros] Access 2003 - Need to AutoNumber starting with 000001...HELP

I agree with Bill and Graham here. I have only one database in which we
decided it was okay to let users see the primary key. That is a very unique
situation. We have nearly 2 million names of people in that table, each
identify with a numeric primary key. It makes no sense to anybody to expect
those numbers to be in any particular sequence, so they are not disturbed by
seeing 10999 followed by 00567, followed by 91001. We track marketing
efforts with those fields (you know those digits above your name and address
on the junk mail you get?), rather than by name, because, of course, with
that many names, it is inevitable that we'll have numerous duplicates.

In other words, if your users can't possibly assign any INTRINSIC value to a
primary key value, and can't, therefore, anticipate seeing sequential
values, or any other "pattern" in then, it is not entirely unreasonable,
IMO, to let them see those values. Otherwise, it's not good practice.

Hi Florence

In every textbox on a form or report where the autonumber value is
displayed, set the Format property to "000000".

This won't change the way the number is *stored*, only the way it is
*displayed*.

I would be wary about displaying an autonumber at all. It is easy to get
gaps in autonumber sequences and often this does not sit well with entities
that need to be numbered sequentially, such as invoices.

Best wishes,
Graham

I'm creating a db in Access 2003 where they want the autonumbers to start
with six numerals as follows: 000001. Have been looking all morning for an
answer.

Can anyone help me?

Thank you.
