So I split the database and right away I received an error. I have a process that runs a alter table query and the alter cannot run on a linked table. I was reading an article by J Street Technology that states that all databases should be split. The article also states tat some tables though can reside in the FE. It is a database that only I use and nobody else. The table would absolutely need to be in the database. This would be the case that the table would not be shared between two machines.

'alter the table to reset the autonumber for the NewTaskID field to 1 each time the form is opened.

The database is a customized database for the tasks and projects that I work on at work. I have a pretty detailed system that I could not reproduce in outlook so I do not think that my outlook.com tasks could fare any better.

Duane-

You can use your Hotmail, Outlook, or even old MSN account to get logged into the Microsoft "Cloud". OneDrive is a part of that - Jim has already tried it.

Also, I don't know the extent of the functionality you want regarding managing projects and tasks. This could be anything from a simple task list that you can check off to something like MS Project.

It would be better to split it - that way Dropbox only has to keep your data synchronized. You can put the front end in any other folder - put a copy on all machines that you want to be able to run the app. Just make sure Dropbox is installed on all of them.

Actually, you can put the database - or just the data back end - in your DropBox folder on your computer. You'll update locally, but DropBox will keep a synchronized copy in the Cloud and will automatically update it on any other device where you're signed in with the same ID. Sounds like an ideal solution for you.

So I have mapped my onedrive on my work desktop and tried to open it as a network drive. After going through the trusted locations issues, I tried to add records and run some processes, it was painfully slow. So that does not seem like a viable solution.

It opens but with errors. I have a splash screen that opens and then closes after performing some actions. Then the errors show up. Then I have a read only bar at the top, that wants me to save as to a folder. I guess that I could store it in onedrive and just move it out of the folder every day.

Hello all,

I have a database that I enter in my tasks and projects for work. It is a personal database that I keep on my flash drive. I back it up in OneDrive each day after using. I was thinking that there has to be a better way of getting to my database so that has more portability. Something that I could open on my work laptop or my work desktop or my personal desktop or laptop.

I was looking at Azure but that seems a bit much for such a small database. The cost does not seem to be worth the 25 MB footprint. Although it would be nice to learn how to use it. I have SSMS on my work machines and my laptop. But I am not sure how that would keep the Access database portable.

I do not have a web location to store the Access database either. What are some thoughts that the forum users have?
