Liz-
No, you should have only one subform. The Navigation Form in 2010 won't work
for you.

Crystal, I didn't know we were talking about using tabs as a solution in the
first place... ?

Hi Liz,
adding on ...
it would be a good idea to ween yourself away from using tabs ... use the
navigation control introduced in Access 2010 instead, when you can. The
navigation control closes tables on the other tabs that aren't showing, which is
good for performance and data integrity.
The navigation control unloads what is not showing, which reduces the number of
open connections. As your database grows and you put more and more on the tab
control, you may run into issues unless you put code in to load and unload
subforms, which is what you are now asking about ...
~~
also, there is a bug with shortcuts working on subforms in tab controls -- this
is not an issue when the navigation control is used.
for instance, if this is the CAPTION of a label that is associated with a
textbox, or the CAPTION of a command button:
&Close
then C will be underlined, and Alt-C is the shortcut to choose it.
Warm Regards,
Crystal

Liz-
Love your "thinking out loud."
You could still have all the fields in one table, but develop subforms that are
bound to the relevant fields based on the type. In the Current event of the
form, load the appropriate subform by setting the Source Object property of the
subform control based on what's in test type. If Me.NewRecord = True, just hide
the subform control but make it visible and set its Source Object based on what
is selected in test type - do this in the AfterUpdate event of test type.

Maybe I'll just have a table that has all possible fields (there aren't too
many) and then have them set as visible if they are relevant based on the test
type. I actually think that would be the best.
I need to get a prototype up soon, and am NOT wanting to duplicate a bunch of
development across multiple forms.

Pros, I'm starting a database for flammability testing with the main form
contents being the same across but then the subform elements including the
fields are distinct based on test type. (heat issue, oil burn, etc.)
I was wondering if it is possible to have some type of beyond late binding main
form to sub form and linking happen so that the sub forms come in as they need
to.
