Troy-
Why do you want to do that? I thought you said there's an Employee # that is
numeric. Do you need me to write some sample code to do what I described below?

Yeah, this is pretty ugly.
If I build a select query, can order employee name ascending, is there
any way to create a "running total" or assign a number to each record in
the query? I've looked around Google, and it seems like this is
possible with a numeric field, but I really can't find anything on a
text field.
Any ideas?

Troy-
Someone should fire that developer! You need to fix the Scheduling table
first.
You could perhaps do it with some code that opens a Recordset on
Employees in
the sort sequence intended by the developer, and another Recordset on
the
Scheduling table. You'll need a new field in the Scheduling table where
you can
put the matching Employee#. Read each record from Scheduling, and use
Move
methods to get to the relative record to find out its real linking
number, then
update the new field in Scheduling. After you're done, examine the two
tables
by hand to verify that the new number is correct, and if it is, delete
the old
field and create a real relationship between the two tables.

Subject: [MS_AccessPros] Table join question
I have a production scheduling system that uses an access database.
There are 2 tables that I need to use to build a report, but I don't
understand the relationship between them. The first table contains all
of the schedule data, and assigns the task to an employee (just a
number, not a name). The second table is the employee table that lists
the employee name, etc. Traditionally, I would expect that the
Employee# field in the scheduling data table would join with an
Employee# field in the employee table, but it doesn't. If it did, this
would be very simple. Instead, the employee# field in the Scheduling
data table returns a number (but not the employee number), but it's the
record number for the employee in the Employee table. As an example, I
have a record in the Scheduling data table which has a value of 10 in
the employee# field. If I go to the Employee table, there is no
employee# 10. Instead, it's looking for the 10th record in the table
(if it's sorted alphabetically).
I've talked to the developer about this, and verified this is the
structure he intended. But, I have no idea how to work with this. I
need to create a report that shows me the scheduled task, along with the
employee name. I have no idea how to create a relationship between
these tables. Any ideas?
Thanks,
