Re: [MS_AccessPros] Re: Billing software for a store/shop

adding on ...you can generally turn anything into a barcode ... numbers as well as text. Pick something that is unique

Lets say you have a control for accepting a scan,

and then the user scans something in. Alternately, the user could type the characters that are often printed below the barcode, and then TAB to end the entry

Let's say the barcode is a productID. If the control is unbound, code could run on the control AfterUpdate event to find what the scan refers to.

Alternately, if that control is a bound combo that gets its list from, for instance, products, then the record is found . There could be code in a NotInList event to add another product on the fly if what was entered wasn't found.

hopefully this gives you more things to think about. Realize that barcode readers are simply alternate ways to input what one could type on a keyboard, and a barcode font is just another way to represent characters.

hi Khalid,

Access treats the scan just like you typed something on the keyboard ... so no extra coding required ;)

Make sure the barcode reader has the ability to program a TAB after the entry. Some give you option to add ENTER as well -- at least one, and preferably TAB is essential to not have to write code to figure out when an entry is done. Many barcode readers, also called scanners, plug into a USB port.

a barcode is simply something printed in a barcode font. Barcode readers will have fontlists they can interpret. The barcode font(s) you install on your computer will appear on the font list for every Windows application.

When you design reports and labels to show barcodes, change the control format to a barcode font instead of something like Arial or Times New Roman. When you buy a bar code reader, you should also get barcode fonts.
