ACCESS FEED: RE: [MS_AccessPros] Access back ends on NAS

My two "hot" Access applications right now are our Application Master System
which houses everything about all the applications we support (252 last count).
It stores ownership and user contact info, Server details, SQL Server instance
details, patching schedules and history, vendor details, SLAs, troubleshooting
for the helpdesk, links to all documentation.

The other one is a project management application with details on all projects
having anything to do with our IT department, resource hours (projected and
actual), time sheets that show how many hours we spend in project and
non-project areas, documentation requirements for BP8, graphs showing resource
utilization.

And, of course they both have all the reports that go with those kinds of data.
I built them both in Access 2003 with SQL Server 2005 back ends.

All of this amuses me because when I was hired I was told we don't support or
build Access databases. I would clean up one the Financial Analysts used for
Fiscal Period reporting and then I would be doing SQL DBA work. Ha! Eight years
later I still spend 80% of my time on modifications or new applications. Good
thing I love working with Access. I'm the Access IT support that we aren't
supposed to have.

Here's my latest argument that nobody can argue with:

We have engineering change management through Access databases that was to have
been incorporated in to Siemans TeamCenter. Well, they failed, nobody talks
about how much money and time was spent on that endeavor that seems to have been
backburnered... nobody says anything... nobody knows... BUT - yes, they
"supported" that endeavor.

Meanwhile, our business practices are still being accomplished quite well, thank
you very much, in Access databases.

So, their argument that they don't support Access, yet they supported the failed
attempt that cost a lot of money ... and we still need to get the work done and
are doing so successfully - in spite of these hiccups... hee hee...

I tell my boss that if I can carry functions that a multimillion "billion"
dollar company can't seem to carry - well then, they should pay more more moula.

At least you're able to have conversations with IT. Some IT departments just
say, "We don't support Access." And that's the end of the discussion.

Bill and what makes it worse in this situation is I get an "Admin has it open on
DC####" where DC is the name of a citrix box in across the country.

...and don't even get me started with what conversations have been transpiring
between me and the corporate IT folks!

If it isn't in the message there is no magic to get it. I sometimes see 'Admin'
has it open on PCNameGoesHere

Other than that, I'm useless to you. I don't have any experience with Citrix
except I I know that oranges, lemons and limes are in the Citrix group. Oh, and
grapefruit, too.
