None of the fields in the subform can be changed, is that right?
Is your subform linked to the parent form? You can check this in the data tab on the property sheet for the subform - "Link Master Fields"/"Link Child Fields").
One way to see if the record source is updateable is to view the record source in data sheet view and see if you can add to it. You should see an empty row at the bottom with an asterisk next to it where you can add an item.
