RE: [MS_AccessPros] Access newbie from Indonesia

Hendra-

1. A linked table is a special table definition that contains the connection string as well as a copy of the definition of the fields in the table. No, the data does not get loaded from the server until your application opens the linked table or a query based on the linked table.

2. No, there is no connection to the server until your application opens one of the linked tables. Access builds a connection when the linked table is opened - either directly, in code (as a Recordset), in a query, or in a form or report that uses a Record Source based on the linked table.

If your application uses many linked tables from the same database, it can improve performance if you open one of the tables in code when the application starts and leave it open until you quit the application. Access will share the connection created when the first linked table is opened with other linked tables that point to the same database. If you open and close only as needed, Access has to rebuild the connection each time.

Thank you very much John,,,
I want to ask several think :
1. About Link Tables : Is link tables just a connection string (like ADO connection string)? Is Link Tables loads all data from server every time we open the access file
that have link tables from outer source ?.
2. In the database that have link tables : are we connected to the server although we do not open any form ? or we get conected to the server if we open open form
that has source from a existing link table in the database that we opened.

Perhaps this not make you confuse of what i mean..
Best Regards
Hendra
