I did not set it up but I believe it was the VM option. I could remote to the server using RDP or ScreenConnect and then run SSMS on it directly (normally I just use SSMS from my desktop to work with it). It was definitely not the single database option as we have multiple databases on the instance. 

I'll add that they have a very robust Internet connection in the office, so it wasn't a case of a slow connection.

Paul, quick clarification — when you say your employer moved to Azure, were you using Azure SQL Database (PaaS) or SQL Server running in an Azure VM (IaaS)?

I'm trying to understand whether the issues you saw were more related to cloud latency in general, or specific to Azure SQL's PaaS constraints.

Windows 10 had quite a run with printing problems for over a year. Check to see if the Win 10 computers are fully updated.

And as far as I know, it has been on let windows choose for years, but maybe I am wrong. Anyway, with the default set to MS PDF, the Access app works once again.

 

The two Win 11 computers on which the app works are both set to let Windows choose default printer.

Have you tried putting a "fresh" copy of the database on the Windows 10 computer? I'm assuming your database is separated into a front end and back end and the users have an accde front end.  I have found sometimes a user's accde file gets corrupted and a fresh copy fixes it up.

I won't address the different Azure options as I don't know them well enough. Others here are much better suited to compare them.

I have a fair amount of experience working with Azure and your biggest wildcard regarding redesign is how your existing app is structured.  In short, you need to minimize the amount of data that moves back and forth between the app and the cloud.  If you've already done that, there may be very little to redesign.  For example, a form that pulls 1,000 records when it loads may work fine with an on premise server but be unusable with data in the cloud.  Complex Access queries may need to be changed to views/stored procedures/functions/pass through queries/etc. When my employer moved to Azure from an on premise server, I had to tweak a few things in the various apps I created/support, but for the most part everything worked fine.

Hi David,

 

If I had to debug this, I would start with the query for the report. Design the report and check the RecordSource property. Run the query. Same issue?

I would also change the query to return just a few records … where CustomerID < 5, so the report would only be a few pages. Does that work OK?
Also inspect the VBA code (if any) in the report's code-behind. As a test you can comment out everything.

I sent this earlier but it is not showing up in my groups messages, so I apologize if this is a duplicate.

 

I have an Access 365 application that I created several years ago (I am not a professional) with a FE and a BE.  One of the modules produces a PDF report after I enter a lot of data.  It has worked for years now and then suddenly it does not.  Instead of outputting the report it spins with a message at the bottom of the screen saying "formatting page".  That message never stops and ultimately the OS will report that Access is not responding.  

 

I do not know how to proceed with trouble shooting this and would appreciate any help.
