Re: [MS_AccessPros] Re: UPC and UCC-128 bar codes

ps

get, or at least consider, a scanner that can read the Code 39 font ...

it might also come with proprietary fonts (and more you can buy) that may offer advantages such as being able to encode more than just standard characters.

Hi Sarah,

adding on to what Bill said ...

a common barcode font, which is free, is Code 39.  It has been around quite awhile and can be downloaded from a number of places.  Instead of writing, for instance, ABC123 with letters we can all read, the barcode font is used instead.

The barcode scanner is something that can read the lines and spaces and interpret the code (then show it to us in a different typeface so we can read it).

It is best for the scans to terminate the entry with TAB, although many scanners can only use ENTER to terminate, and some can't even use that -- they end with oddball characters.  You don't want to get a scanner that can't use Enter, at least -- Enter AND Tab is better still -- otherwise you want to have a harder time figuring out when the scanner is done with the entry.  Instead of being able to use Access's built-in features, you will have to test characters ... a lot of work.

Scanning a code is just like typing it on the keyboard -- so nothing special to do to use a barcode reader (scanner) instead of the keyboard -- in fact, many of them plug into a USB port.   After all, the computer doesn't care what font something is display in, only the contents of the value ;)

a barcode is simply a sequence a characters ... it can be however long you want and contain whatever information you want.  You can print barcodes for  Primary Keys with descriptive information, codes, accounts, product numbers, names, addresses, ... anything you want.  It is just a different font to print.

If you want to print on labels, and will print a lot, and on-demand, it is good to buy a label printer instead of jamming your printers that are mostly for paper.

warm regards,
crystal

I don't have any experience with that but I do know that a bar code uses a special font.

Does any body have experience with printing bar code from Access 2003 (and above) application?
