RE: [MS_AccessPros] Access newbie from Indonesia

Hendra-

Are you using SQL Server for the tables? If so, using a PassThrough query can be useful to execute an "action" query (UPDATE, INSERT, DELETE) on the server without passing any data to Access. It can also be useful to execute a complex query that returns data, but it won't be updatable. If the back end database is another Access database, you cannot use pass-through queries.

Thanx John..
Ok i can understand now...i have read also that using pass through query can improve the performance significanly,

but i have not used Pass through query yet, i still learning about it,,,which is better ?:
1. Using Pass Trough Query with parameter , or
2. Using Pass Trough Query with parameter to execute Stored Procedure in database Server, or
3. Using VBA with parameter to to execute Stored Procedure in database Server.

this is really important to me to make learning priority of retrieving records methods.

Regards
Hendra

Hendra-

Note that ll three of those posts are old. In the first one, poor performance was due to trying to do a JOIN with a local table and a non-Access back end. The query had to do multiple full scans of the view to perform the join. The second post is about using Access 2000, and it doesn't mention which SP level. Access 2000 did have some performance problems with linked tables that can be avoided by getting rid of Subdatasheet View and a few other tweaks. The third post notes poor performance when both the "front" end and "back" end are shared on a server - definitely a bad idea.

Perhaps you not get bored to answering my question.. :D

For me Link Tables is the best feature in MS Access, cause i can build queries without write any codes,...just drag n drop in query design.

but i have read articles that Link Tables approach is not recomended to Multi user Application over a network, is that right ?
I have made several simple application using access 2003 and it succesfully runing on the single user on stand alone PC, but i really curious about

linked tables issues in the network like :

http://www.office-forums.com/poor-performance-running-queries-tables-linked-oracle-back-t725817.html
or :
http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.php/48388-Access-2000-poor-performance-%282000%29
or :
http://bytes.com/topic/access/answers/455369-working-linked-tables

I have not tried all my application in networks

Best Regards
Hendra

Yes, exactly. The type of back end server does not matter - all applications using linked tables will benefit from leaving a connection open.

Thanx John...
So we have to avoid access to rebuild connection until we quit the application...it seems like this :
http://www.fmsinc.com/MicrosoftAccess/Performance/LinkedDatabase.html

Do it also recomended for the server database type such mysql or sql server ?

Hendra-

1. A linked table is a special table definition that contains the connection string as well as a copy of the definition of the fields in the table. No, the data does not get loaded from the server until your application opens the linked table or a query based on the linked table.

2. No, there is no connection to the server until your application opens one of the linked tables. Access builds a connection when the linked table is opened - either directly, in code (as a Recordset), in a query, or in a form or report that uses a Record Source based on the linked table.

If your application uses many linked tables from the same database, it can improve performance if you open one of the tables in code when the application starts and leave it open until you quit the application. Access will share the connection created when the first linked table is opened with other linked tables that point to the same database. If you open and close only as needed, Access has to rebuild the connection each time.

Thank you very much John,,,
I want to ask several think :
1. About Link Tables : Is link tables just a connection string (like ADO connection string)? Is Link Tables loads all data from server every time we open the access file
that have link tables from outer source ?.
2. In the database that have link tables : are we connected to the server although we do not open any form ? or we get conected to the server if we open open form
that has source from a existing link table in the database that we opened.

Perhaps this not make you confuse of what i mean..
Best Regards
Hendra
