Here's the deal as I understand it:
When you install the runtime on a machine with an older version, the older one is not harmed. Libraries should be left intact, but they might have to be checked especially if a database uses late-binding for any Office product.

The pain arises from switching from one version to another. There is a "re-install" that has to take place so reg keys can be changed. We developers call that the coffee break install because you might as well go pour yourself a cup while you wait for Access to open.
