Sarah-
You don't say which version of Access you are using. "Unrecognized" can happen if you open a 2007 .accdb in 2010 or 2013 and edit some objects. 2007 won't be able to open the database after that. My FixBroken utility can sometimes repair that, but you have to find a version of Access that will open the database. My utility "downgrades" the forms and reports so they can be opened in 2007 again.

It sounds like it is toast. If possible, try opening it using Access 2010. If you don't have that I might be able to help if you can send me the zipped file. Depending on its size, you might have to upload it to my website storage. I can give you a link in a private email if that's what you want to do.
EverythingAccess.com does a good job of recovering data from a corrupt database, but they do charge for the service.

I get the following message when trying to open an Access 2003 back end db:
'Unrecognized database format'.
The database contains tables and data only.
I have tried compact and repair, importing the tables to a new blank database, but no matter what I try, I get the same message:.'Unrecognized database format'.
I downloaded 'basCompactUtility.bas' from WRMOSCA , but it also gives me the same message.
Is there any utility to repair this db?. The customers last backup is from August (!!!).
