Well, I used a different driver as below:
[ODBC]
DRIVER=SQL Server Native Client 11.0
WSID=PC510656
DATABASE=PHQCDB
APP=2007 Microsoft Office system
Trusted_Connection=Yes
SERVER=phqcdb
Description=phqc sql server db with v 11
My 2 col table with a PK and a name, I used the ms access report creator and generated a repoort, i went straight to the linked table on the SQL server, approx 900 rows of data.
No sort, no page, no nothin.
Run1 took 18 seconds.
Run 2 took 20 second
Run 3 took 21 seconds.
again this will run in sub second speed using a plain old access be on a shared drive.
any ideas anyone ?

Ty Graham, I was suspicious of this. Unfortunate I am at the mercy of an I.T. department. However, your comments will give me the necessary clout to get the drivers updated.
I will write back after the install with results.
Terence
PS Thank you Duane also :)
