I can't find the original post so I'll tack onto this one. I don't think the first asterisk is the problem. I use that for a lot of my search box stuff. I would check to see if that field is a lookup field which would show "Need for..." but it is actually storing a number or some other foreign key.
Open the table in design view. select the field and look at the bottom of the window. Click on the LookUp tab to see if it is a combo box. If it is it should show you the row source with the lookup table. If it is indeed a lookup field you will have to add the rowsource table to your query and put your NOT LIKE "*Need*" in that field's criteria.
