The field is a Yes/No field and, unfortunately, the revised SQL also produced no names.

Is the convenorGenderMale field actually text or is it a Yes/No field. If it's Yes/No try this expression:

 Convenor: IIf([convenorGenderMale],[mFirstName],[fFirstName])
