Re: [MS_AccessPros] Re: append query instead of update query

Hi Liz,

> "Is it possible that an append query could lock an entire table?"

that depends on the default Client Settings (different for every client -- in other words, every machine or virtual machine).

This means your users may have different settings unless your code changes it (in which case, it should save what they had and restore it).  I cover the Access defaults (glossyily -- is that kind of a word?) in a video on YouTube here:

it is 16 minutes so get comfortable ....

If you want to jump right to the record locking stuff, click this link instead:

An Append query should lock only the "empty" blocks available for insert.

Thanks Bill,

Logically that is the case to me too, and besides that, I've seen how network interruptions cause this kind of issue.

John would probably know for sure, but I don't think an append would lock the entire table. It seems to me like this would be a case for locking at a record level.

Pros, some time ago I inquired about an update query possibly locking the whole table and it could have been correct.  I changed the way I did things to now run an append query.
It seemed to have fixed things, but since we'd been running an older version (the update) and the newer version (the append) at the same time I would occasionally get the error.
Another complicated thing is that I've seen network interruptions lock the tables because Citrix doesn't lose the connection or something.

However, I was wondering, that is it possible that an append query could lock an entire table?
