You don't *have* to use SQL Server for the Back-end Liz, in the same configuration we also used Access Databases as (part) of the back-end.
If you can get your users to use Ctrix (or one of the other solutuions, we liked to use 2X as it, almost, seemlesly put the Access Application, running on the server, onto the user's local desktop) then it will save your blood pressure (possibly at the cost to the blood pressure from your Sysadmins ;-) )
Just be aware that not all licences of Access run in RDP Environments. If you have Access Runtime then there's no problem.
