Tim,
1. Moving your tables to SQL server doesn't guarantee better performance. You could even make it worse. There many tweaks you can perform to increase performance. A simple one is to use pass-through queries as record sources for your reports. Search the web to find lots of tips.
2. You will have many more features including security, stored procedures, cte queries, etc. SQL Server has much greater scalability and query power.
3. I would stay with Access as a front-end since it is the best tool for quickly creating highly functional applications.
