Further thought - do you mean moving the columns in datasheet view of the table rather than in datasheet view of the form?
I normally move columns in datasheet view of the form and as i say it normally works fine

Phil-
You shouldn't have had to move the columns in table design. Switching to Datasheet view, moving the columns, then *saving* the table before closing should have done it.

Hi Bill
Aha that's interesting!
No the form is not based on a query - it is based on a table.
However, I went to table design and moved the field to the position I want it in. I then displayed the form in datasheet view and the columns hadn't moved but this time when i moved it and saved it - it stayed where I want it.
Not sure I quite understand why but it seems to have solved my problem (please feel free to explain)
Thanks for nudging me in the right direction
Phil

You're right. It should open to the last layout unless something is changing it. Is there a query as the RecordSource? If so, arrange the fields in the order you want them within the query.
