:-) Halo Mbak Lasmi, buku ADP mungkin bisa pesan ke Gramedia, namun bila sudah habis, bisa coba telusuri di pasar2 buku alternatif, misal Palasari Bandung, Senen, dll. Untuk perbandingan kecepatan antara ODBC MySQL dengan ODBC SQL Server 2000, saya belum pernah membuat perbandingannya. Namun jodohnya Access memang SQL Server karena sama2 satu merk, Microsoft. Tentunya sudah dibuat sedemikian rupa sehingga antara software satu dan lainnya dibuat kompatible.

Saya sarankan, gunakan SQL Server untuk backend database. Mengapa? Ada 3 alasan utama, yakni:

1. SQL Server mendukung konsep database VLDB (Very Large Database) sehingga dapat menyimpan database dengan size yang besar. Hal ini berbeda sekali dengan database desktop (Access MDB) yang mempunyai kapasitas lebih sedikit (hanya 2 GB).

2. SQL Server adalah sebuah produk database yang mendukung aplikasi database Server-Client secara online, real-time dan multi user.

3. SQL Server sangat mengurangi penggunaan lalu lintas data jaringan / network, sebab ia dapat mengirimkan dan mengambil data sesuai yang diinginkan oleh user saja. Sebagai contoh, jika Anda hendak mencari suatu data kota yang bernama "Bekasi" saja, maka SQL Server akan mengirimkan melalui network, data kota yang namanya "Bekasi" saja. Sedangkan pada Access MDB, seluruh data karyawan akan dikirimkan dahulu ke PC user melalui network, kemudian baru di pilih yang berkota "Bekasi" di PC usernya. Bisa dibayangkan jika data seluruhnya ada 2,000,000 record, maka akan sangat lama sekali jika menggunakan Access MDB, padahal yang kotanya "Bekasi" hanya satu record saja!

Jangan khawatir lambat, karena saya ada pengalaman menggunakan link table ke SQL Server lebih dari 10 tahun, bukan ADP, dengan jumlah user pengguna software ini 25 user, dimana hampir semuanya online setiap hari dalam waktu yg bersamaan. Nilai Auto Number pada table General Ledger Transation History (GLTH) = 22.931.451, dan Item Transaction History (ITR) = 18.801.187. Anda bayangkan, lebih dari 22 juta. Namun ternyata jumlah sebesar ini bukan masalah bagi SQL Server, karena batas maksimal nilai Auto Number adalah = 2.147.483.647. Pada table GLTH ini, auto number sudah mencapai 22.931.451 untuk penggunaan kurang lebih 15 tahun. Maka untuk mencapai nilai maksimal sebesar 2.147.483.647 akan memerlukan waktu kurang lebih sekitar 1404 tahun lagi. Kemungkinan besar saya sendiri sudah berada di alam kubur atau akhirat, wallahu'alam.

Jadi menurut saya, Mbak Lasmi tidak perlu migrasi ke ADP, gunakan saja Access MDB/ACCDB biasa dengan Link Table via ODBC SQL Server 2000. Dengan menggunakan link table, tidak perlu ada perubahan kode dll, tinggal pakai.

ohh, aku mbak mas, tp bukannya mbaknya si mas loh hihihihi,
jadi tidak semudah mengexport tabel ke sqlserver ya... aku penasaran pingin blajar banyak mas, buku tentang membuat access project laris manis tak disisakanpun sama aku, mas2 and mbak2 pakar msh punya ga, hiks..
mas, lbh cepat mana ODBC MySQL atau ODBC SQL Server 2000..
aku takut mdbku makin lama mkn lelet...

tidak compatible dengan ADP. Saran saya, sebaiknya menggunakan Link Table
via ODBC SQL Server 2000.

I tried writing my first bit of code without help and went down if flames.

I have a form that the user will select a value from a Combo box and then
press a button to view the next form, sorted by the combo box.

As the first part of the code I tried to use...

    If [cboSeason] = Null Then
        MsgBox "Season field must be filled"
    End If
   
End Sub

The "Null" does not work.  If I put a value in there(If [cboSeason] = 1)
and then set the combo box to that value it works fine.

What is the value of an unfilled combo box?  I figured it would be Null.  An
empty combo box = Null comes up False.

I am trying to eliminate the Access error boxes when a query is run without
the combo boxes being full.

Here's the data each file may or may not have:

Transaction Count
Session #
Amount
Maintenance
Recalls
Keepers
Secondary

If I use a single table with a field for each entry, I'll end up with empty fields. For example, if file one has these fields:

Transaction Count
Session #
Amount
Maintenance
Recalls
Keepers

and file 2 has these fields

Maintenance
Recalls
Keepers

and file 3 has this field

Secondary

then the first set of fields will be empty for file 3 and there will be empty fields for file 2..

But as I type and think this through that may not be a bad idea. That way you'll know if the file had only transaction or transactions and maintenance. A Null valuewould mean either no data was entered or it was missed.

Does that make sense?

I am starting a new project that will track Daily Tasks. One of the tasks is to download and process files. Each day the number of files will change. I need to record the name of the file and several other pieces of info after the file is processed; i.e. Count, Transaction Number, Amount, etc.

Some days there will be only 10-12 files, other days there could be upwards of 70-75 files. I need to record each file for each day. Also, these files are associated with 3 different clients.

How would I design a table(s) that will allow this type of data? I have a DB setup but it ends up with empty rows on all but the busiest days. I would like to avoid that if possible.
