hi Brooks,

I would suggest adding AutoNumber primary keys (with unique index) and Long Integer Foreign keys (default value=Null, index that allows duplicates and ignores null) with a set of queries to update the foreign keys. Then use the Long Integers to link. Add fields to the end if you import and other fields need to be in a certain order. This will greatly enhance performance.

Size:
AutoNumber/Long Integer = 4 byte
2 dates, a long number and a 1 character text fields = 2*8 + 4 + ? --> more than 20

So just by doing this, each join will be at least 5 times faster. The indexes will help speed it up too.

Thanks for the post.
Unfortunately, the 3 million row tables needs 4 fields for the primary key: 2 dates, a long number and a 1 character text fields.
The frontend and backend are both on my Dell laptop with a Intel Core i5 processor and 8 GB of RAM.  I just upgraded from a HDD to a SSD and there was only a 9% reduction in run time.  
I compact and repair regularly.  I've been using Access since 1.0.  
A separate database server running SQL Server is probably an option.

It is hard to suggest how to improve performance without knowing more.

A big thing you can do for performance is use short keys. What are the data types and sizes of your primary and foreign key fields?

Then, where is the data hosted? On a LAN? Cloud?

How often is compact and repair done on the databases ?

Are there any long text data types being used? any attachment data types? or other complex data types? are they isolated? Can that data be moved so it is stored externally?

Does anyone has any suggestions on how to improve performance on a processing intensive Access application ...  There is a small frontend that is about 9 MB.  There are 2 backend databases.  One with static data that is almost 1 GB.  The main table is 3 million rows of stock option quotes.  The other backend database is 31 MB and contains tables that grow by a couple thousand records during the run.  The main processing is doing queries against the 3 million row table.  The run currently takes about 5 hours.  All the tables have primary keys and indexes matching the where conditions in queries.  I'm using Access 2007 and all databases are ACCDBs.  Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.
